12 Mistakes to Avoid During a Cruise

A cruise is an entirely different vacation than a trip to a major city or a resort stay. If you’ve never been on a cruise, it can be a lot of fun (and many get hooked). However, there are some things to know. Here, our PHL parking company shares some of the top mistakes to avoid making during your trip.

Not washing your hands enough

There are thousands of people on your cruise ship and everyone is in close quarters. This means germs are everywhere. Keep yourself healthy by washing your hands as often as possible. When you do, make sure you use warm water and an anti-bacterial soap.

Booking an early flight home

Even if your cruise schedule says you’ll dock at 7 a.m., our PHL parking company suggests booking a flight home after noon. You may think you have enough time, but realistically, an early flight will be stressful to catch.

Staying in the main dining room

Each night, cruisers all get together to eat dinner in the main dining room. You’ll enjoy delicious dishes every time, but don’t make that the only place you eat. Many cruise ships have a variety of restaurants that offer specialties, so branch out.

Skipping the safety demonstration

We know cruise safety demonstrations are anything but fun, but you shouldn’t skip them. Safety is important and you’ll want to know what to do in an emergency situation.

Choosing the wrong cruise line

When you go to book your cruise, consider all cruise lines. Some are geared towards families while others are geared towards adults. Decide what kind of experience you want, then choose your destination.

Not knowing your cell phone plan

While you’re out a sea, you’re probably not going to get cell phone service. Before you set sail, our PHL parking company suggests you check with your cell phone provider about roaming charges. You don’t want to rack up a huge bill.

Over-indulging

Cruises mean food, and lots of it. From breakfast buffets to ice cream stands to burger joints and more, you’ll find food everywhere. Do yourself a favor and don’t over-indulge. It may seem great at the time, but your waistline will suffer after the trip is over.

Forgoing excursions

Wherever you cruise to, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for excursions. While there’s plenty to do on the ship and at the destination, don’t skip out on extra fun. Excursions could include hiking, horseback riding, zip-lining, wine tasting, and much more.

Not checking your account

Vacations are supposed to be about relaxing and having fun. When you do, however, the costs can add up. Don’t forget to check your on-board account balance every once in awhile so you’re not surprised at the of the trip.

Eating late at night

Many cruise ships offer great late-night food, but eating late at night can cause issues. Many people experience seasickness, indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach during a cruise and eating late can enhance all of this.

Not knowing the dress code

Every cruise line is different when it comes to dress code. This also goes for the specialty restaurants on the ship. Before you pack, check the dress codes so you can bring the right clothing.

Arriving last-minute

Cruise ships don’t wait for everyone to board. This means if you’re late and it sets sail, you’re out of luck. Make sure you book your flight there with enough time to allow for a possible delay, traffic, and other inconveniences.
